PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL - Rickie Fowler, the world's 14th-ranked golfer, has committed to compete in The Honda Classic, a PGA TOUR event which will be played February 20-26 at PGA National Resort & Spa.
Fowler joins a world-class International field that includes defending champion Adam Scott, ranked seventh in the Official World Golf Ranking, No. 8 Justin Thomas, No. 9 Sergio Garcia, No. 12 Justin Rose and No. 13 Danny Willett, the reigning Masters Champion.
Fowler has eased into his 2017 schedule. He played overseas at Abu Dhabi before making West Coast stops at the Farmers Insurance Open and Waste Management Phoenix Open, where he finished fourth. After a couple weeks of polishing his game, Fowler is anxious to begin his run to The Masters at The Honda Classic.
Scott has taken a somewhat similar approach early this year. He took six weeks off before playing in The Singapore Open in mid-January and then another three weeks off before entering this week in Los Angeles.
Thomas and Garcia chose a faster course for the opening weeks of 2017. Thomas, one of the hottest players in the world right now, scored back-to-back PGA TOUR victories in Hawaii last month.
Garcia, who finished second to Scott at The Honda in 2016, had a wire-to-wire victory at the Dubai Desert Classic that catapulted him back into the Top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking. The Honda Classic is his first event of the year in the United States.
The star-studded International field at The Honda also includes Englishmen Paul Casey (16), Tyrell Hatton (19), Matthew Fitzpatrick (29), Luke Donald (97), and Ian Poulter, Scotland's Russell Knox (18), Belgian Thomas Pieters (47), South Africans Ernie Els, Branden Grace (17), Louis Oosthuizen (25) and Retief Goosen, Spain's Rafa Cabrera Bello (26), Argentine Emiliano Grillo (28), Italy's Francesco Molinari (31), Germany's Martin Kaymer (50), Irishmen Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell (87), and Japan's Ryo Ishikawa.
The American contingent of early commitments is headed by Palm Beach products Brooks Koepka (20) and Daniel Berger (33) and Zach Johnson (39).
Several former Honda champions will also play including Russell Henley (2014), Camilo Villegas (2010), Mark Wilson (2007), Michael Thompson (2013) and Mark Calcavecchia (1987, 1998).
Players have until 5 p.m. on Friday February 17 to commit to the tournament.
