PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL – Fresh off a victory in the Qatar Masters January 25 which elevated him to No. 9 in the World Golf Rankings, Sergio Garcia has committed to play in the 2014 Honda Classic, a PGA TOUR event which will be held February 24-March 2 at PGA National Resort & Spa.
Garcia joins a World Class field which already includes second-ranked Adam Scott and seventh-ranked Zach Johnson from the World Top 10.
“It’s great to have Sergio return after a few years away and this is a testament that the world’s best players see the Honda Classic as a “must play” event,” Honda Classic Executive Director Kenneth R. Kennerly said. “The game’s elite players continue to see the opportunity to compete against one of the premier fields on the PGA TOUR.”
Garcia birdied the third extra hole to win a playoff with Mikko Ilonen in Doha, Qatar after rallying from three strokes down to Rafa Cabrera-Bello entering the final round. He birdied six of the last 12 holes for a seven-under 76 and Ilonen had to make a 19-footer for birdie on the final hole to force the playoff.
“It’s a good start to the year,” Garcia said. “It’s great to kind of set up my year a little bit, to win again on the European Tour. The goal now is to keep going and to keep improving. Obviously I am still feeling like I can do better, so that’s the goal.”
Garcia’s 11th victory on the European Tour came on the heels of a December triumph at the Thailand Golf Championship, where his girlfriend, Katharina Boehm caddied for him. His Honda commitment gives the tournament another of the hottest players in the world. Johnson, in particular, has also been on a tear, winning three times in his last six starts.
Garcia has won eight times on the PGA TOUR, the last victory coming in the 2012 Wyndham Championship. But he has been incredibly consistent, making the cut in all 17 of the PGA TOUR events he entered in 2013 with six Top 10 finishes, including a tie for 8th at The Masters.
Before his Asian Tour victory in Thailand, Garcia finished fourth in the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in Shanghai and tied for the second at the Nedbank Golf Challenge on the European Tour in South Africa.
“I consider last year a really good year, more than anything, not wins, but the consistency that I was able to achieve was what really stood out for me,” Garcia said. “So I’m excited to keep going in the same direction.”
