Palm Beach Gardens, FL - Storms which plagued the second and third rounds of the 2015 Honda Classic not only left damage throughout PGA National Resort & Spa's Champion course, but also prevented the tournament from setting an attendance record for the ninth consecutive year.
The Honda attracted 165,200 confirmed spectators over eight days between last Monday's Miami Dolphins Pro-Am and this Monday's rain-delayed finish that saw Padraig Harrington become the fourth repeat champion in the history of the event with a playoff victory over 21-year-old upstart Daniel Berger of Jupiter.
Harrington joined Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller and Mark Calcavecchia as multiple winners of The Honda.
The 2015 attendance was 27,852 less than the record 193,052 that attended the 2014 Honda with perfect weather the entire week. The attendance was 168,900 in 2013, 161,700 in 2012, 111,950 in 2011 and 101,200 in 2010.
"Considering the challenges we had, we were fortunate to have a fifth tournament day to help bolster our attendance," Honda Classic Executive Director Kenneth R. Kennerly said. "The community gave us a strong head start with advance ticket sales reaching record highs and then responded strongly on Sunday when we honored Saturday tickets due to our weather interruption and there was the opportunity to see extra golf.
"Thursday and Sunday attendance was extremely good and then we were pleasantly surprised at how many people came out on Monday morning to watch the finish. With all the bleachers and hospitality areas filled, the scene at the final hole was extraordinary considering it was a Monday late morning finish.
"At the end of the day, it was a spectacular tournament. We have a great repeat champion and local fans had the chance to watch our homegrown Daniel Berger, who no doubt will be a future star on the PGA TOUR. We are happy with the way we made it through some challenging circumstances and now preparations begin for next year when hopefully Mother Nature will again cooperate better."
