Palm Beach Gardens, FL - The Eighth Annual Junior Honda Classic will tee off January 3-4, 2015 at PGA National Resort & Spa with 96 youngsters representing 18 countries and 12 states testing their skills over the resort's Fazio and Champion courses.
Boys and girls competitions will take place over 36 holes in both the 16-18 and 14-15 age groups. They will be competing on the Fazio Course on Saturday. Sunday they will play on the Champion Course, which annually plays host to the best players in the world in the PGA TOUR's Honda Classic. Play begins at 7:45 a.m. each day.
This is the first year that The Junior Honda is part of the IMG Junior Tour, a series of events which allow junior golfers to compete and gain exposure to college golf, professional golf, and national junior rankings. It also is a qualifying event for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships and the IMG Academy Junior World, two of the most prestigious Junior events of the year.
Andrew Kozan of Palm Beach Gardens is among the favorites in the Boys 16-18 Divison. He recently won the Florida Junior Tour championship. Shuhei Takahashi of Japan is the top International player. He is the points leader on the IMG Tour and won two fall events.
Rinko Mitsunaga of Roswell, GA, ranked 35th in the national junior rankings, is the top girls player in the older division.
The countries represented this year are Argentina, China, Colombia, England, France, Germany, Iceland, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, United Kingdom and the United States.
"The Junior Honda has grown into one of the premier Junior events in the United States," Honda Classic Executive Director Kenneth R. Kennerly said. "It is all about developing and growing the game of golf and doing it with the Juniors is the future."
The Junior Honda Classic also gives the kids a PGA TOUR experience including the operation of the event, Florida State Golf Association rules officials, and tournament merchandise.
Winners are invited to attend the Champions celebration and be recognized on the 18th green on March 1 with the 2015 Honda Classic Champion.
