Tiger Woods Commits To The Honda Classic

Tiger Woods, the No. 1 Player in the World Golf Rankings, has committed to compete in the 2014 Honda Classic, a PGA TOUR event that will be played February 24-March 2 at PGA National Resort & Spa.

It is the third consecutive year that Woods, who finished second at The Honda in 2012, has played the tournament, which is contested just 20 minutes from his Jupiter Island home.

“The Honda Classic is close to my home, and I want to support it whenever I can,” Woods said. “We have a Learning Center at Murray Middle School in Stuart (Florida), and this event does so much to help the community, including the efforts of the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation.”

Woods finished tied for 37th at The Honda in 2013. The year before, he made a frantic charge with an eight-under par 62 on Sunday, but finished two strokes short of Rory McIlroy.

“Tiger has meant so much to The Honda Classic since his move to Palm Beach County,” Honda Classic Executive Director Kenneth R. Kennerly said. “As a result of the support from Tiger and the other top players in the world, our attendance has risen from 112,000 in 2011 to 171,000 last year. Our charitable contributions to the local community have gone from $1,266,422 after the 2011 tournament to $2.13 million last year.

“The growth of The Honda has meant so much to the area charities and the golf fans that enjoy watching Tiger and Rory and the other great players compete. We couldn’t be more thrilled to learn that Tiger will be playing The Honda again this year.”

Woods’ official commitment is The Honda’s fifth so far from a player in the Top 10 in the World Golf rankings. He joins second-ranked Adam Scott, the defending Masters champion, No. 6 Zach Johnson, No. 7 Rory McIlroy and ninth-ranked Sergio Garcia as early commitments into the field. Players have until Friday February 21st at approximately 6 p.m. to commit into the field.

Graeme McDowell, the 2010 U.S. Open champ who also won the RBC Heritage Classic in 2013 and is now ranked No. 15, also has committed along with Charl Schwartzel (No. 18), Hideki Matsuyama (No. 22), Thomas Bjorn (No. 24), Jamie Donaldson (No. 27), Lee Westwood (No. 29), Louis Oosthuizen (No. 30), Gonzalo Fdez-Castano (No. 38), Patrick Reed (No. 45), Martin Kaymer (No. 47), and Chris Kirk (No. 49).

Other players who have committed include Robert Allenby, 1997 Honda champ Stuart Appleby, two-time Honda winner Mark Calcavecchia (1987 and 1998), Stewart Cink, Erik Compton, Retief Goosen, 2005 champ Padraig Harrington, Dudley Hart, Charles Howell III, Trevor Immelman, Sean O’Hair, 2011 Honda champ Rory Sabbatini, 1999 Honda champion Vijay Singh, Boo Weekley, Mike Weir, 2007 Honda champion Mark Wilson and 2009 Honda champion Y.E. Yang.

Grounds tickets, Bear Trap tickets and other hospitality tickets and packages for the 2014 Honda Classic are on sale at or by calling 1-866-846-6328. Proceeds from The Honda Classic, an IMG-managed event, benefit Children’s Healthcare Charity, which awarded a record $2.13 million to South Florida children’s charities in 2013.
